THE MANY SMALL PLEASURES OF LIFE

One fine morning, I received an SMS from a friend. It said: “Most of us miss out life’s big prizes- Nobel, Oscar, Grammy’s; but we are all eligible for life’s small pleasures- a pat on the back, a hug from a best friend, a glorious sunset, a silent night on a terrace, a slow walk on an empty road with the person you love the most. So don’t worry about missing life’s big rewards. Enjoy its innumerable tiny pleasures.”

How simply put, yet so profound! It set me thinking about how we set our sights on grand rewards all the time. Ask a mother what would give her supreme happiness and the chances are that she would say, “A hug from my son.”

Urban life, you may argue, doesn’t give enough scope to enjoy nature. Fair enough, but what stops you from enjoying the call and twitter of the bird in your window, the beauty of the carpet of gulmohar on the road in the evening, the pitter patter of rain and the heady smell of mud emanating from the parched earth-the simple unadulterated joys of life.

Why can’s we weave these innumerable little joys into the fabrics of our lives? Happiness comes in small moments of joys. We must snatch them and cherish them. They may seem ephemeral in nature but nothing stops us from freezing the moment in our mind and replying it over and over again, much like wordsworth who wrote, ‘The music in my heart I bore long after it was heard no more.’

That is the spirit of life. Either tackle or forget those little irritating things in life without letting them make you worried. Let your worries be buried by your joys that you can “produce” by being just a little more imaginative.

Life throws up more of good moments than bad ones. All that is required of you to grab the opportunities. Smile and the world will smile. So, go seize the day and enjoy the gift of life!

Simplicity

Simplicity is my lifelong-friend.

Change of Life

We sometimes say we need a change,
As a change is good as a rest
But often fail to ponder
If change is for the best.

When we feel change will do the trick
And it’s time for a change,
Do we really stop to think
And have a frank exchange?

For “change, for change’s sake” can mean
That, as our rooms have faded,
When we change the wallpaper,
The furniture looks jaded.

And if we change too many things
In way, or shape, or form
Then constant need to change occurs
And change becomes the norm.

And change becomes our mentor
As change succeeds each change
And every changeless constant
That stays unchanged seems strange.

And so, if you’re sore tempted
To spawn unneeded change,
Just change your mind and see that you
Don’t change it, for a change.

1) HAVE THE COURAGE TO CHANGE WHAT YOU CAN, SERENITY TO ACCEPT WHAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. COMMON SENSE IN AN UNCOMMON DEGREE IS WISDOM.





2) MAKE THE EFFORT TO BEGIN TO ACCEPT OTHER PEOPLE FULLY AS THEY ARE. THE TRAGEDY IS THAT OUR OWN MIND IS NOT IN OUR CONTROL. AND WHAT IS THE COMEDY? OUR OWN MIND WHICH IS NOT IN OUR CONTROL, WITH THAT UNCONTROLLED MIND WE WANT TO CONTROL OTHER PEOPLE'S MIND WHICH IS NOT EVEN IN THEIR CONTROL—AN IMPOSSIBLE TASK!!! THIS THE COMEDY!




3) ACCEPT YOURSELF. IT IS OUR INABILITY TO ACCEPT OURSELVES FULLY, WITH ALL OUR WEAKNESSES AND SHORTCOMINGS THAT CAUSES SO MUCH ANGUISH IN OUR LIVES. LAUGH AT YOURSELF, AT YOUR BEHAVIOUR AND AT YOUR ANTICS. DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY. NO ONE ELSE DOES!





4) DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF WITH ANYONE. YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEIR JOURNEY IS ALL ABOUT. DON'T IMITATE OTHERS. INSTEAD OF BEING A POOR IMITATION, BE 100% ORIGINAL.



5) DO NOT BLAME OTHERS FOR YOUR SORROWS AND PROBLEMS.


6) TRY TO PUT YOURSELF IN OTHER PEOPLE'S SHOES.


7) TRY TO BE MORE OPEN WITH PEOPLE.


8) DO NOT WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHERS WILL THINK. THE SO CALLED 'OTHERS' ARE EQUALLY WORRIED ABOUT WHAT 'OTHERS' WILL THINK!! WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK OF US IS NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.

9) WATCH YOUR HABITUAL REACTIONS TO THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU AND TO YOUR ENVIRONMENT. TRY TO REDUCE BEING DEPENDENT ON ANY PARTICULAR PLACE, TIME, OBJECT, PEOPLE, ENVIRONMENT, CONDITION, SITUATION AND CIRCUMSTANCE FOR HAPPINESS. ANY KIND OF DEPENDENCY IS A CAUSE FOR BONDAGE AND ANY KIND OF BONDAGE IS A CAUSE FOR MISERY. NO ONE IS IN CHARGE OF YOUR HAPPINESS EXCEPT YOU. NOBODY REALLY CARES IF YOU ARE MISERABLE. SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE HAPPY.


10) WHAT IS GIVEN TO YOU WILL BE TAKEN AWAY. IT INCLUDES THE INSTRUMENTS CALLED THE BODY, MIND AND INTELLECT THROUGH WHICH YOU FUNCTION IN THIS WORLD. SO DO NOT HOLD ON TO THINGS THAT DO NOT BELONG TO YOU.


11) INTROSPECT REGULARLY. ANALYSE YOUR NEEDS, ATTACHMENTS, DESIRES, HABITS, HANG-UPS, WEAKNESSES AND SHORTCOMINGS. IT HELPS IN OVERCOMING THESE. VIEW THE WHOLE WORLD AND EVERY THING AND BEING IN IT AS YOUR TEACHER.




12) REMEMBER THAT EVERYONE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO ATTAIN HIGHER LEVELS OF AWARENESS. TRY TO SEE THIS POTENTIAL IN ALL THE PEOPLE, NO MATTER HOW DIFFICULT IT MAY BE.





13) HAVE NO HATRED FOR ANY THING OR BEING, EVEN FOR A FRACTION OF A MOMENT—EVEN IN A DREAM. FORGIVE EVERYONE FOR EVERYTHING.





14) DON'T AVOID DIFFICULT SITUATIONS. VERY FEW OF US ARE REALLY AWARE OF PROGRAMMING AND CONDITIONING OF THINGS AND BEINGS. WHEN WE RECOGNIZE IT THEN WE START TO DEAL WITH IT. HOWEVER GOOD OR BAD A SITUATION IS IT WILL CHANGE. FRAME EVERY SO CALLED DISASTER WITH THESE WORDS "IN 5 YEARS WILL THIS MATTER?" TIME HEALS EVERYTHING. GIVE TIME TIME.




15) DON'T ALWAYS IDENTIFY YOURSELF COMPLETELY WITH YOUR MIND, BODY AND ACTIONS. EVENTS HAPPEN, DEEDS ARE DONE, BUT THERE IS NO INDIVIDUAL DOER THEREOF.



16) INSTEAD OF DOING WHAT YOU LIKE START LIKING WHAT YOU DO.



17) YOU SIMPLY CANNOT BE UNHAPPY UNLESS YOU HAVE DECIDED TO BE UNHAPPY.





18) LIVE IN THE NOW AND ENJOY THE PRESENT MOMENT. MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR PAST SO THAT IT DOESN'T MESS-UP THE PRESENT. LIVING IN THE PRESENT MEANS CONSCIOUS ACTION NOT MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.



REMEMBER, YOU ARE TOO BLESSED TO BE STRESSED.
